Wheel Identification

This guide is designed to aid you in identifying the different styles of Oldsmobile rally wheels used from the mid 60's to the mid 80's. We will be adding info on the other wheels in the future. Please direct any questions or comments here: OldsJunction@ClassicOldsmobile.com







      Lets begin by giving you a brief overview. Then we'll get down to the finer detail. Click on each picture to get a more detailed explanation.

SSI

SSI
Debuted in 1966. Either fully chromed with black painted centers, or chrome with black painted centers and a stainless trim ring. Uses a bolt on, chrome center cap. 14X6 and 14X7. Click here for more info.


SSII

SSII

Originally offered in 1968. Painted Argent silver or grey. Uses 5 stainless bezels in between the 5 spokes, and a stainless trim ring, and incorporates a bolt on center cap. 14X6 and 14X7. Click here for more info.


SSIII


Same as above, but the wheel is painted the lower body color of the car. And in some rare cases, painted a contrasting color. This wheel used a bolt on center cap until the mid 70's when GM switched over to a snap on center cap. Beware, the bolt on and snap on wheels have different back spacing. 14X6, 14X7, and 15X7. 80's SS


An updated version of the wheel above. This time the whole wheel is chrome, with a painted "Stripe" in the center of each spoke. The colors ranged from black, silver, to gold. The Hurst Olds models sported a red stripe around the outer wheel lip. This wheel also used the snap on center cap. 14X7 and 15X7.


SS-IV


"This "polycast plastic, molded to a conventional steel rim" was available from the factory on 1971 and 1972 Delta 88's only. Price was $101.11 in 1971 and $98.00 in 1972. These were not aluminum. They appear to have raised ovals outside the lugs, and the rim itself is gray. 14x7 are option code PE1, 15x7 are PE2."..... Click here for more info.


Sport Wheel


"Option code N78 (possibly N76), Cast Aluminum Sport Wheel with Die-Cast Ornament. Available in 1978, $290 on the Salon and Supreme, $274 on the Supreme Brougham and $283 on the Calais. These are the same wheels that were part of the 1979 & 1980 W-30 packages, but they were only available in gold."..... Click here for more info.
