Wheel Identification

SSIII wheels

Here is the third wheel in the Oldsmobile offering for intermediates, what many consider the traditional Olds wheel. The Super Stock III was introduced in 1971 as part number 406069, and option Code N67. This is basically an SSII wheel painted the lower body color. It uses the same trim rings and center caps as the SSII's. It was available in a 14" X 7" size, then in 1973 it was offered in a 15" X 7" size for the Hurst Olds. In 1975 it was reconfigured to a snap on center cap, and could be had in both the 14" and 15" sizes. This wheel continued in one form or another until 1988 when the last rear wheel drive A/G body Olds was dropped from the line-up. To see the SSII specs, click here.

Somewhere along the line, presumably when the wheel changed from bolt on center to snap on center, the back spacing or offset was changed. An 80's 14" or 15" SSIII wheel will bolt up to a 64-75 car just fine, but if you try to put a 68-75 14" bolt on center cap wheel onto a 78-88 Cutlass you will run into problems. The very outer edge of the wheel lip on the backside will rub on the upper control arm. A 1/8 to 1/4 wheel spacer will solve the problem, but pay close attention when doing this swap.
