Common Convertible Top Problems
For 68-72 A Bodies
GM had a few design flaws with the top frames on the 68-72 Cutlass
model convertibles. One of which causes premature tears just behind
and above the quarter windows in what would be the "B" pillar area
on a hard top. This is illustrated in the photos below.
When installing a new top, be sure that the installer is aware
of this common problem and has a viable solution to deal with it.
Here locally (Dallas, TX area) you can get a top for $800 but it
will look like this in about a year. I have talked to several reputable
interior shops and a professional job with a glass rear window and
top well (area behind the back seat that the top folds down into) installed will run $1200. Remember with some things, you
get what you pay for.
These shops also told me that no matter what, do not leave the
top down over night. This will help keep the frame from stretching
out this area and other problem spots on the top.
